GORDON GRIP

Artist: GORDON GRIP
Title: Guitar Music
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1987
Songs: 10
Label: Estra House Records
Style: Melodic Hard Rock

Unknown singer songwriter & guitar wizard’s lone private press album.  Looks to have been performing out of New York City.  Solid and beefy guitar laced melodic hard rockers all around.  This dude definitely had heaps of talent, he also produced this album and played other instruments.

TERESA GUNN

Artist: TERESA GUNN
Title: Identity
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1986
Songs: 8
Label: Vanity Records
Style: AOR

The band moves more into a AOR synth rock direction with additional production techniques, including a big drumming sound - a more mainstream effort.  Standout Cuts: The title song is a spirited guitar laced new wave rocker and I’m sure was the album single.  ‘Deception’ has an edgy rock tone with emotive vocal arrangements.  Chirpy new wave is found in the quirky ‘Take You Out’.

TIM BOGERT

Artist: TIM BOGERT
Title: Progressions
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1981
Songs: 10
Label: Accord Records
Style: AOR

Former bassist from Vanilla Fudge, Beck-Bogert-Appice and Cactus moves out on his first solo album.  Side 1 is very strong with quick paced keyboard laced AOR rockers and ends with a cool little slow burner ‘Friend Of Mine’.  Side 2 kicks off with a killer single worthy infectious rocker ‘Take It Or Leave It’.  ‘Caught In Her Flame’ changes things up a bit with quirky progressive moves.  Closer ‘Blind Love’ works in some power pop/new wave angles.  This debut delivers the goods – it’s consistently strong track by track.

NO I.D.

Artist: NO I.D.
Title: Atomic Cartoon
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1987
Songs: 10
Label: Third World Records
Style: New Wave

U2 influenced new wave guitar rock foursome hailing out of Houston, TX.   Check out the anthemic driving guitar rockers ‘Sticky Guilt’ and ‘Where The Water Reaches Ground’.  The guitars and drumming take it up a notch on the harder and edgier ‘Too Close To Cuba’.  The synthesizer comes out to play and leads the charge on ‘Dancing Snails’.  The band taps into some nice melancholic arrangements on the mid-paced ‘For Now Anyway’.  The urgent ‘Under Water’ is an album standout with its angular guitar melody.

ZINK

Artist: ZINK
Title: Self Titled
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1982
Songs: 10
Label: Self Released
Style: Rural Rock

Unknown and highly rare private rural rock with country flourishes.  The band looked to have been from St. Paul, MN.  The opening ‘Coffee Can Do It’ is quirky and comical.

JEFF HELLER

Artist: JEFF HELLER
Title: Jeff Heller Collection
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1985
Songs: 10
Label: Self Released
Style: AOR

Jeff Heller was the guitarist and lead vocalist in the late 70’s/early 80’s rock band Ian Shelter.  They band played the club circuit in the Northwest.  In the early 80’s he hooked up with the prolific Kim Fowley, who eventually helped him produce this solo album.  Catchy melodic AOR is the order of the day with cool stints of guitar heroics – Overall, well played, produced and FM Radio ready.

BATTERY SOUND

Artist: BATTERY SOUND
Title: Discharge
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1982
Songs: 7
Label: Flexible Records
Style: Minimal Synth

This obscure and rare album is the brain child of Mark Freedman – a composer, multi-instrumentalist and engineer.  He operated under a variety of monikers in the 80’s, most notably the Powerman name.  He also owned and operated a New York based recording studio called Battery Sound.  This project starts with three quirky female led minimal electro tracks and then proceeds into a couple of more experimental male fronted tracks.  The second side (East Side) kicks off with an instrumental minimalist arrangement.  The closing number ‘Breakdown’ goes back to the cheeky female fronted electro vibes.

RICHARD H

Artist: RICHARD H
Title: Hi-Fi Limbo
Format: Vinyl EP
Year: 1985
Songs: 4
Label: Optional Art Records
Style: New Wave

Obscure singer-songwriter dude with his melodic new wave rock EP.  Richard H was from Wichita, KS and received radio exposure on the alternative rock station KMUW.  The lead off ‘Music For The Times’ or the infectiously quirky catchy ‘No Colors’ were probably the tracks played on the radio.

MAD RACKET

Artist: MAD RACKET
Title: It’s A

Style: Hard Rock

Excellent melodic hard rock with AOR tendencies by this mid-West foursome.  Rare and recommended.

SYMON MICHAEL

Artist: SYMON MICHAEL
Title: Big Deal
Format: Vinyl LP
Year: 1985
Songs: 7
Label: Self Released
Style: SSW Outsider Rock

San Francisco outsider rock courtesy of SSW Symon Michael.  There’s some odd arty splashes throughout, including one goofy cover of ‘Sepulveda Dreamin’.  Symon enlisted a variety of session musicians, which included a bunch of horns (Trumpet, Sax, Tuba and Trombone).
